Because We Said So offers Relational Support: trauma-informed guidance for teens in individual sessions or small groups, as well as parenting support. While I do hold a Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology, this is not a therapy practice.

Therapy is meant to help teens heal from mental illness, past trauma, or emotional distress.

Relational Support is mainly focused on the present and future. It helps teens build awareness, make decisions, set goals, and find meaning or direction in their lives; it offers a supportive, thoughtful sounding board to help teens reflect, grow, navigate relationships, and move forward.

School resources are often scarce and focused on academics or other school specific issues. Relational Support can be a great middle ground for teens who need something in between, or it can be used when a teen is ready to ‘step down’ from clinical therapy but still needs extra support.

Individual Sessions

Office hours for individual sessions are 2:00, 3:00, 4:00, and 6:00 PM on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday and 12:45, 1:45, 2:45 and 3:45 on Wednesdays. As the practice grows, I will add morning hours. Individual sessions for teens or their grownups can be booked per session, or in a six pack for a discounted rate here.

Small Groups

Small groups will meet on Saturday afternoons. Once a minimum of three people have booked for a group, the group will begin the next Saturday (but not before July 19). Small groups can be booked six sessions at a time here.

1:00 PM: Grief Support

This is a group for teens who are dealing with loss and grief to support one another with gentle guidance from Martha. It is not a therapy group.

This group will run continuously with between 3 and 5 members. Once a 6 week run is finished, members can either book six weeks again, or step back to booking weekly.

2:30 PM: Everyone Is So Mean
(And Other Perspectives on Friendship)

This is a group for middle school aged teens to discuss and practice boundary setting, perspective taking, conflict resolution, and other important social relationship skills.

This group will run for six weeks. If there is enough demand, I will run it again, but other groups will be added.

4:00 PM: Wait, I Was a Girl's Mom
(Parenting While Your Child Is Exploring Gender Identity)

This is a group for parents whose teens are questioning their gender identities. The group will provide a safe and supportive space for discussion and processing of all the feelings about gender that come up for us in general, or specific to our child, when our children are exploring or changing their gender identities. This is a queer friendly, nonfascist space and hatefulness towards the LGBTQIA+ community will not be tolerated.

This group will run for six weeks, and will continue based on demand.
